A carer stole 950 from a 91-year-old woman she was looking after to pay off her own debts, Dundee Sheriff Court heard.
Jennifer Burns, 27, used Dr Alexina McWhinnie’s bank card to withdraw cash for herself after she was trusted to lift money for the elderly lady.
Fiscal depute John Adams said: “On December 19 last year the complainer’s son checked her bank records and noticed something was awry.
“They contacted the care service and it was realised that the accused had been the person there on the relevant dates.
“The complainer does admit that at one point she gave her PIN number and card to the accused and asked her to withdraw money, but not on those other occasions.
“Total amount involved is 950.”
Burns, of Maryknowe, Gauldry, was traced and interviewed by police.
After being cautioned and charged she replied: “I know I shouldn’t have done it. I’ve never done anything like that before. I feel absolutely terrible.”
Burns previously admitted two charges of theft via letter to the court.
Solicitor Scott Norrie, defending, said: “She had accrued approximately 2,000 of debt after her relationship broke down and she had to leave their shared accommodation. She had a reasonable relationship with the complainer and they got on well.
“She saw the opportunity to clear some of her debts and abused the trust of this lady.”
Mr Norrie added that Burns disputed the figure involved and claimed to have given 250 to Dr McWhinnie and kept the remaining 700.
Burns admitted stealing a bank card in Newport and using it to obtain cash at Scotmid, High Street, Newport, on various occasions between November 15 and December 14 last year. Sentence was deferred until June 9.
