Tay Road Bridge closed for two hours at rush hour due to police incident

Cars queued on the Fife side of the bridge.

Just over two hours after it began the Tay Road Bridge reopened following a full scale emergency response over concerns for a person.

Police said the incident was eventually resolved “safely.”

The incident began around 4.30pm with police, ambulance, coastguard and Broughty Ferry RNLI all attending.

It ended at around 6.40pm.

Traffic  built up in both Dundee and on the Fife side of the bridge. Motorists in Dundee were  diverted to Fife via Perth  at one point in a bid to ease congestion in the city.

Traffic in Dundee was  gridlocked on all streets around the city centre and outlying areas.

Traffic on Riverside Drive extended all the way to the Swallow roundabout.

Meantime, traffic on the Fife side was understood to be tailed right back for several miles.

Drivers have taken to social media to talk about traffic mayhem.

Many have also voiced concern for the person who is understood to be at the centre of the situation on the bridge.

A spokesperson for the Tay Road Bridge confirmed on Twitter that the bridge closed just after 4.30pm.

Stagecoach has warned people to expect delays to their 99, 42 and 77 bus services.

A spokesman for HM Coastguard said they were assisting police during the incident.

He said: “Coastguard teams from Dundee and St Andrew’s are currently assisting Police Scotland along with crews from both Broughty Ferry lifeboats.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers were called to attend the Tay Road Bridge at around 4.20pm on Tuesday,  October 19, following a concern for a person.

“The road was closed and the incident was resolved safely. The roadway reopened just after 6.30pm.”
