Gulistan House Indian restaurant in Broughty Ferry has made the shock announcement that it is to close at the end of this week.
The venue, on Queen Street, will serve its last curry this Sunday October 31, after 42 years in business.
In a Facebook post, the company says the decision has been taken due to the “chronic and unstable health of our business owner from the beginning of the year”.
“It is with a very heavy heart we are announcing the closure of our business,” the statement says.
“It has been an extremely difficult decision to make which we know will come as a disappointment to many, but one that has had to be taken under very challenging circumstances.
Health of business owner forces closure decision
“Due to the chronic and unstable health of our business owner from the beginning of the year, we have very sadly taken the tough and difficult decision to close at the end of this week, Sunday October 31 2021.
“We wish to thank all our customers and staff who have shared our journey.
“It’s been our pleasure making happy memories. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone that has supported us and enjoyed being with us when dining, taking away, or being hosted by us as a venue for their special occasions.
“We are all very sorry to be leaving at such short notice and are incredibly sad to say goodbye to you all.
“We look forward to serving you one last time this coming week.”
Bosses say they will be contacting customers individually about pre-existing bookings and have encouraged anyone with unredeemed gift vouchers to use them this week.
Hundreds of customers have expressed their shock and sadness at the announcement.
Maria Bell wrote: “Very sad news, you will be truly missed. Good luck to you all for the future and thank you all for the great past memories you have provided.”
Margaret and Graeme Lister posted: “We’ve been a regular for at least 37+ years, the food has always been amazing and the staff have always been very welcoming.
“We are going to miss you all so much.”
Customers say restaurant ‘a great loss’
Bob Wilson wrote: “As a Guli weekly regular since the first Gray Street days a great loss indeed. Thanks for the excellent friendly service and food. Wish all the staff the best of luck.”
Gulistan House was opened by Munsif Ali Mohammed on Gray Street in 1979 before relocating to a former church on Queen Street, where it has become something of a well-known Broughty Ferry landmark.
It was one of few local venues that allowed customers to take their own alcohol to drink with meals.
Following Munsif’s retirement in 2017, his son Ahzar Mohammed took over the business.
Railings outside the venue were damaged earlier this year after a car crash.
The company says that the venue may be available for self-catered private hire events and functions until a new operator is found.
