“Glimmer of hope” for Blackness Road store

A new convenience store could open on Blackness Road in Dundee to replace Morning, Noon and Night after it closes.

The shop’s owners ScotMid confirmed this week that the store would close on August 16.

They said it was too expensive to keep the store open but they hope all staff will transfer to other ScotMid branches in the Dundee area.

The Blackness Road store was one of the last shops to carry the Morning, Noon and Night brand after the company, which was founded by former Dundee United chairman Eddie Thompson, was sold to ScotMid in 2004.

But now West End Liberal Democrat councillor Fraser Macpherson has said there is hope the store will not be vacant long.

Mr Macpherson said it is “disappointing” that ScotMid refuse to reconsider their decision to close the mini-supermarket.

He said: “The closure of Morning, Noon and Night would be a massive blow to the local community.

“It has served the area well for years, has great staff, is always busy and is a well-used store.

“I have discussed the mater with ScotMid’s head of corporate communications but it is clear that the company has taken a decision to pull out of Blackness Road and is not prepared to reconsider that decision.

“This is very disappointing.”

But he said he has already been contacted by two business owners who are interested in taking on  he lease for the store.

Mr Macpherson said: “I have now had two separate approaches from Dundee business owners who are potentially interested in taking the mini-supermarket over.

“I have put them in touch with both ScotMid management and with the Dundee City Council economic development team.

“Whilst these approaches do not guarantee the future of the mini-supermarket, they certainty offer a glimmer of hope that a new occupant could continue to operate the premises successfully.

“We cannot afford to see this vital local mini-supermarket close, so I welcome the interest from the business community.”
