A woman who died in an alleged Dundee murder on Bonfire Night has been described as a “lovely woman”.

Yvonne Barr died on Friday following an incident on Aboyne Avenue in Douglas.

Kenneth Melville, 58, has appeared at Dundee Sheriff Court in connection with his partner’s death.

On Monday a police presence remained at a block of flats on the street, including forensics officers wearing white suits.

Locals told of their shock at the death of Ms Barr, 47, who is understood to have lived in the area for several years.

‘Yvonne was a caring person’

Danny Courtney, who lives in a nearby block, said: “This is just horrible news to hear.

“Yvonne was a caring person who would have done anything for anyone.

“Police have been conducting some door-to-door inquires here this afternoon.”

One neighbour, a 26-year-old man who did not want to be identified, described her as a “lovely woman”.

He said: “I’m absolutely heartbroken to hear she has died. I thought she was in the ICU and I was phoning friends for an update over the weekend.

“I’ve known her for around seven years, she was such a lovely woman, her door was always open to have a chat. I can’t believe that she has died.”

Another Aboyne Avenue resident says he became aware of a police presence on Saturday morning.

‘Unusual’ police presence on street

He said: “There were a few police vehicles on the street at around 3am on Saturday.

“We had no idea what had happened but it was unusual to see that type of police presence in the street at that time in the morning.

“It is shocking to hear someone has died and my thoughts go out to her family.”

Other residents have also told of their sadness at Ms Barr’s death.
