A dog owner has thanked members of the public who battled to save her pet after he fell into an icy Dundee reservoir.
Lynn McMahon and her family have been left “devastated” after Kodi died at Clatto Park on Sunday.
The seven-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier was walking with Lynn’s father when he ran on to the ice while playing with another dog.
Despite both canines being rescued from the water, Kodi could not be revived.
‘We are absolutely devastated’
Lynn, from Downfield, said: “We are absolutely devastated. It all happened within a matter of seconds.
“This was completely out of character for Kodi to run on to the reservoir like this.
“They were literally at the edge and I think he just got carried away playing with another dog.
“Members of the public threw the lifebuoy in for both the dogs to grab on to before a runner went in to get him.
“Given he’d been running and playing, he was warm, and I think he went into shock when the ice broke and he went in.
“My dad was naturally in shock, but once people got Kodi out they tried to revive him at the side of the water.
“I really can’t thank those people enough for trying to help during the incident.”
Lynne has issued a warning to other pet owners on social media.
Dogs on ice ‘for seconds’
She added: “Given what happened to Kodi on Sunday, I put a social media post out just to warn people of just how dangerous the icy water can be.
“The dogs were literally on the ice for seconds before it broke – it just goes to show you how fragile it can be.
“Although this as been an accident, I’ve seen in the past folk letting their kids go on to the ice at Clatto and I know it’s the same at the Swannie Ponds.
“I just wanted to put a warning out about what happened to our dog.
“People have sent on some kind messages but it’s totally heartbreaking, he was such a lovely dog.
“He was the softest boy and was great around kids, he was just a wee baby.”
