Despite concerns their fundraising efforts might not be enough, the community managed to secure the sculpture for £10,000. Applause broke out in the Dundee Rep’s auditorium as the gavel came down on the item. Ian Philp, chairman of the Broughty Ferry lifeboat management group, said: “I’m delighted, absolutely delighted. We just hoped we had enough money. “We are very pleased with the support we got within Broughty Ferry and the traders’ association. It was fantastic. “The competition (with Arbroath) kickstarted us into action and we were so pleased to win it. “We are now going to plan a homecoming to bring him back.” Wullie will sit inside the boathouse over the winter months, visible from the outside, to help protect him from the elements. However, he will make a return to the pier next summer. For more, see Wednesday’s Courier
