A new exhibition at Dundee Contemporary Arts will celebrate the 80th anniversary of Oor Wullie and The Broons.
The show, called DCA Thomson, will see six artists exploring Dundee’s publishing history, focusing on the beloved Broons and Oor Wullie cartoon strips.
The artists taking part in the exhibition, which runs until February next year, are Rob Churm, Rabiya Choudry, Hideyuki Katsumata, Craig Coulthard, Malcy Duff and Sofia Sita.
The exhibition will include murals, prints, drawings, sculpture and videos as well as archive material from over 100 years of DC Thomson.
Following DCA Thomson, the DCA will team up with The Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh for the first Scottish exhibition by acclaimed artist Mark Wallinger.
Wallinger was responsible for the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square and the exhibition will focus on his most recent work, id Paintings.
It will also include sculptures such as Self (Century) and Time and Relative Dimensions in Space – a mirrored version of Doctor Who’s Tardis.
Graham Domke, exhibitions curator at DCA said: “DCA is a place that can present local and international artists responding to DC Thomson’s iconic comics and then work with a senior figure like Mark Wallinger – one of the UK’s most acclaimed artists.
“The six artists in DCA Thomson are gaining their reputations in the art world so it feels like a good balance to present these exhibitions back-to-back.”
DCA director Beth Bate added: “We’re thrilled to share our plans for our exhibitions programme until June 2017, which encapsulate so many of the things that make our programme special: from the fantastic breadth of work on show to the ability to work with artists at all stages in their careers, and unique partnerships with DC Thomson and The Fruitmarket Gallery.
“We can’t wait to welcome audiences to these wonderful exhibitions.”
