Members of Caird Park Golf Club have voted “overwhelmingly” to oppose plans to build the Regional Sports Performance Centre in Caird Park.
Golf club members held a special general meeting with the Caird Park Golf Club committee on Sunday, to discuss the future of the club.
Members had expressed “concerns” about plans to build the multi-million pound sports performance centre in the park.
An Any Other Competent Business (AOCB) motion was brought forward by a club member to discuss the Caird Park proposals.
Members voted “overwhelmingly” to oppose the plans and it is understood some members are already upset about the disruption current building work has caused.
A spokesperson for Caird Park Golf Club said: “At a Special General Meeting on Sunday September 25, members voted to register their opposition to the Regional Sports Performance Centre by a clear majority.
“This was on the grounds that the centre does not provide benefit to the people of Dundee as indicated by the Caird Park Trust.
“The result of this vote will be sent to Dundee City Council.”
Dundee City Council revealed plans to build the £21 Regional Performance Centre for Sport in Caird Park in June.
It has also been suggested Dundee Football Club might use the centre as a training facility.
The campaign group Care for Caird, who oppose the proposals to build the centre in Caird Park, were backed by Scottish Green Party earlier this month.
Campaign group organiser Amy Paterson has organised a petition hoping to draw attention to their cause.
The petition opposing the building of the centre was nearing 1,000 signatures on Monday evening.
According to the campaign group, only a “specialised few” will benefit from the new sports centre.
Councillors will meet on October 24 and vote on whether to approve the proposals.
Scottish Greens co-convener Maggie Chapman said the council should consider building sports facilities elsewhere, and not in an area which would “detract from existing green space and existing wildlife areas”.
Scottish Conservative MSP Liam Kerr said the people of Dundee should grab the opportunity to host the new facility with “both hands”.
The North East constituency MSP lent his support for the council’s plans and said opposition to the proposals was “short-sighted”.
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council said: “The council’s development management committee will meet to decide on the application in due course.”
