A Dundee student has won the regional round of a surgical skills competition.

Dundee University student Alex North, 22, won the Dundee round of the competition, run by Britain’s oldest surgical college, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The competition involved participants engaging in a series of demanding surgical challenges, with a winner crowned for each of the UK’s 19 medical schools.

Alex, along with the winners of each of the other areas, will now go on to compete in the Grand Final in Edinburgh on February 18, with the aim of being named the sharpest surgeon in the the country.

Alex, who won a travel and accommodation package to compete in the final, said: “I was surprised to win, it hadn’t really occurred to me that I would have a chance of qualifying for the final from a heat of such talented individuals.

“It was a great experience overall and it was fantastic to witness the high standard of surgical skills on show from the students at Dundee University.”

The competition, which was run in association with Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology, will see the UK winner receive prizes including a Medtronic Minimal Invasive Robotic Experience.

Convener and College council member Roger Currie, added: “We hope that it will inspire the next generation of surgeons and place them in a unique position for their future career.”
