Former Dundee United manager Jackie McNamara has been appointed as York City’s new chief executive less than a week after standing down as manager.
McNamara stood down as York City’s first team coach last Wednesday, only to be appointed caretaker manager of the club until a replacement was found.
He has now been appointed chief executive and will focus on the “development of communication strategy” at the Yorkshire club.
The one-time Celtic player oversaw a downward spiral at York which culminated in The Minstermen being relegated from the English Football League.
He was sacked as United’s manager at the beginning of the 2015-16 season after a poor set of results, with the Terrors eventually being relegated from the Scottish Premiership under Mixu Paatelainen.
Former Wrexham coach Gary Mills has been announced as York’s new first-team coach.
In a statement, York City Football Club said: “Jackie will focus on all operational aspects of the club with specific attention paid to the development of a communication strategy, effective both internally and externally, administration management, aspects of the academy, aspects of the foundation and commerciality to name just a few of the areas of his involvement.”
“When required by the first team manager, assistance will also be provided by the chairman and chief executive, especially in relation to certain financial aspects of the playing budget.
“It is imperative that we support the first team manager by taking away the non-playing issues so he can focus on results.”
