A man was taken to hospital as a precaution after sitting on the windowsill of a tenement flat for around six hours.
He is said to be in a stable condition and is not believed to have been injured as a result of the incident, which caused Albert Street to be in lock-down between 10.50am and 4.50am on Saturday.
It is understood that police officers had initially attempted to make enquiries at the property.
Police had cordoned off the section between Co-Op and Morgan Academy, with the road closure initially causing tailbacks all the way up Pitkerro Road.
Around six uniformed officers and two police vehicles were on the scene and two men in civilian clothing appeared to be negotiating with the man.
A police spokesman said: “The incident was done and dusted at around 4.50pm and the road re-opened.”
Another added: “The man has received medical treatment. He was taken to Ninewells Hospital where he was given the appropriate care.”
The ambulance service were initially called at 11.30am but did not take the man to hospital until later in the day.
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We received an emergency call from Police Scotland at 11.30am on Saturday to attend an incident.
“A male was conveyed to Ninewells Hospital as a precaution and he was in a stable condition.”
At the time of the incident, Albert Street was busy with shoppers and the commotion drew a crowd of onlookers.
One eyewitness said: “This went on for hours.
“Albert Street is one of those places where all sorts of things happen, but I haven’t ever seen anything like this.”
