Dundee Labour has descended into meltdown after a former Dundee Lord Provost called for a “clean-out” amid a furious selection row.
One high profile trade union activist has now cut up his party membership card after two councillors were deselected as candidates for next May’s local elections, only for the decision to be overturned by bosses in Glasgow.
Phil Welsh, a branch secretary for Unison, said: “There was hope but that hope has been shattered.”
Former Provost Mervyn Rolfe slammed that decision but backed a purge of “under-performers”.
A highly charged meeting is expected to take place on Thursday, with one senior source expecting members to “go tonto”.
A party spokesman said: “Scottish Labour has a robust set of selection procedures to ensure we have the best candidates possible.”
