The RRS Discovery is closed for the next three weeks for a restoration project.
The ship, which is docked at Discovery Point in Dundee, will undergo essential conservation work to repair and clean its masts and rigging.
Dundee Heritage Trust’s five-star rated attraction will be closed to the public for three weeks as part of the £350,000 project, although the adjacent centre remains open with visitors receiving a 50% discount while the ship is out of bounds.
She will reopen on November 21, although the entire project is expected to take up to a year to complete.
RRS Discovery was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in Britain. Designed for Antarctic research, she was launched as a Royal Research Ship (RRS) in 1901.
Its first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, carrying Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their first successful journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition.
Paul Jennings, executive director for Dundee Heritage Trust, said: “It’s only through proper maintenance and restoration that we can ensure she will be here for Dundonians and their families to enjoy for many more years to come.”
