Plans to build 121 homes at two Dundee sites set for approval

Plans for two major building projects creating 121 homes in Dundee could be approved by councillors next week.

A former industrial site on Ballindean Road in Douglas would be used for 49 houses and 24 flats, while the second wing of B-listed Burnside Mill in Lochee has been earmarked for conversion into 54 flats.

The Ballindean Road site would see homes built by Cullross Ltd and Caledonia Housing Association.

The site is bordered by Ballindean Place, Balmedie Drive, Ballindean Road and Douglas Road with the homes available for affordable rent or sale.

The site was last used by national gas firm the British Oxygen Company (BOC).

The company operated from the Dundee site for a number of years before a merger with German firm Linde, becoming the world’s biggest industrial gas supplier.

The £8.2 billion takeover saw the firm wind down operations at the turn of the century.

Disused railway may be removed

The first wing of the Burnside Mill warehouse meanwhile has already been transformed into flats.

But the next stage aims to complete the full project, including conversion of the remaining historic building and removal of a disused Victorian railway platform and embankment.

It was last used as a sports centre but has become increasingly run down in recent years.

Detailed design images have not yet been released.

The remaining wing of Burnside Mill has lain unused for around 20 years. Supplied by G Paterson Architect.

The plans by developers AG Akermo would see the properties put up for social rent operated by Hillcrest Housing Association.

The mill buildings were originally used to store jute for the former Camperdown Works and were built in 1862 and 1882.

The Camperdown Works’ rail line spurred off the main Dundee to Newtyle line.

A rail platform remains along most of the northeast elevation which was used for unloading jute.

The buildings were used to store jute from the huge Camperdown Works, pictured, which once employed 14,000 staff.

The mill building has not been used for around 20 years and has deteriorated to such an extent it is now listed on the Building at Risk Register.

Both plans will be brought before Dundee City Council’s planning committee on Monday March 14.
