Two leading Labour councillors have called on Dundee City Council to clean up one of Dundee’s main roads once and for all.
Labour leader Kevin Keenan told The Courier last month that he felt graffiti and overgrown grass along Riverside Drive gave visitors “unacceptable first impressions”.
Mr Keenan argued people entering the city via the Swallow Roundabout will be disheartened to see “buildings covered in graffiti” and “very overgrown grass”.
The graffiti has now been removed, but both Mr Keenan and West End councillor Richard McCready believe more must be done to ensure “the entrance to the city is the best it can be”.
Mr McCready said: “It is important that residents and visitors get a good first impression of Dundee, and right now I do not think that Riverside Drive does that.
“I am meeting with officers of the council soon to discuss what the council can do to improve the the appearance of Riverside Drive.
“I know that the council is not responsible for all of these areas but I think that the council should take a leadership role in making sure that the entrance to our city is the best it can be. I am looking for action on this.”
Echoing the calls, Labour leader Kevin Keenan said: “Following the article in the paper I am pleased to see that the building you featured, the graffiti has been cleaned from it.
“I think from the point of view of the ambassador route to the city this is a step in the right direction.
“I look forward to the areas that are overgrown being cut back and I would hope that council get a litter pick up done there soon as I am sure that driving in this morning they could easily collect a ton of litter along the length of Riverside.”
A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “We are continuing to monitor the ambassador route and will take any appropriate action if necessary.”
