Over half of all Castle Huntly inmates have been given leave to return home for Christmas — including those serving life sentences.
Figures obtained by The Courier show a total of 153 prisoners will return to their families for up to eight days to celebrate the festive season.
The prison has a capacity of 285 low supervision adult male offenders from across Scotland.
The number of inmates being sent home for Christmas has been gradually declining in recent years from a high of 200 in 2011/12.
A total of 831 prisoners have been granted home leave since then, of which 10 broke their leave agreement.
The data was released to The Courier under Freedom of Information legislation.
Those remaining in Castle Huntly over Christmas will be served an option of cold or hot breakfast food on Christmas morning, followed by a three course lunch.
The menu offers the choice of chicken Balmoral with trimmings, a mushroom, brie, hazelnut and cranberry Wellington, or halal curry. All come with a range of vegetables and roast potatoes. Soup and Christmas pudding is also on offer.
Inmates can also enjoy a badminton competition on Christmas morning and afternoon, followed by bingo.
Meanwhile, HMP Perth offers its inmates a hot breakfast followed by a chicken fillet or Quorn garlic and mushroom bake for lunch, with soup and Christmas pudding or apple pie.
It has no particular activities planned for Christmas Day, but held a strongman contest on Friday.
