He is described as aged in his mid-40s and of average build. He may have been wearing a blue Scotland football shirt, jeans and trainers.
Police erected a cordon around the pathway between West Marketgait and Yeaman Shore.
Nearby shop workers said they were unable to exit via the backdoor while police were on the scene.
One nearby shop worker said: “We’re not sure what happened, but the police were there earlier this morning about 8.30am.
“They were here before any of us got here.
“We were told that we couldn’t go out the back, but we were able to go out again in the afternoon.”
Another shop worker said the police had asked the business if they had any camera footage of the path.
She added: “Unfortunately we don’t have any cameras that look out that way.”
Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have been in the area to get in touch.
Officers are keen to speak to any drivers passing the area who may have dash-cam footage.
Detective Sergeant Craig Kelly said: “We need to establish what happened to this man and I am asking anyone who was in the area and saw anything to get in touch.
“We believe the man described can help so I am asking him to call us.
“In addition, anyone who was driving in the area and has dash-cam that could help should also get in touch along with anyone with private CCTV.
“If you can help please contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0831 of Thursday June 2.”
