The hospitality sector is set to be a major component of the Dundee waterfront redevelopment.

It is a market that the project’s backers believe will take off with the V&A design museum opening its doors in 2018.

The new attraction is expected to bring thousands of extra visitors to the city, and planning officials predict that hundreds of new hotel beds will be needed to cope with demand.

The Malmaison and Apex hotels are already in place with the latter planning to extend into the neighbouring Grade A listed Custom House.

A Hampton by Hilton Hotel at West Marketgait is set to open in the new year and an enlarged Premier Inn is being built at Discovery Point.

A Sleeperz hotel is being built as part of the £28 million redevelopment of Dundee Railway Station, and a hotel could be part of a mixed-use development earmarked for a vacant site on Greenmarket.

More accommodation for tourists could come with plans to convert a former office block at the junction of Whitehall Crescent and Crichton Street into a hotel with a rooftop restaurant.

The city centre also boasts a Holiday Inn Express and a Travelodge.

Away from the new kids on the block. the city centre also boasts the Queen’s Hotel, a classic Victorian property whose famous former guests include Winston Churchill and Frank Sinatra.
