A Syrian child aided by a Tayside charity has undergone life-changing surgery.
Fatima Albakour was left with severe burns as a result of ongoing fighting in her home country.
The three-year-old, who volunteers describe as having an “infectious smile”, was left with burns to 60% of her body.
The youngster’s family eventually escaped to Lesbos before they were invited to Germany for Fatima to undergo “life changing” plastic surgery.
Surgeons believe Fatima’s operation has been a success and expect her to recover over the next few weeks.
Homegrown charity, Dundee Refugee Support, provided vital supplies for Fatima and her family after their arrival in Lesbos.
The group were asked to source and provide a specialist push chair with cover from the sun as well as sun cream to protect Fatima.
Mike Strachan, from the charity, explained: “Somebody we know who has been working in Lesbos got in touch to say they needed a specialised push chair for Fatima and her sister.
“We had to track down a chair which specifically had a special sun visor which kept Fatima out of the sun.
“We were asked to find specialist sun cream to send over as well.
“It took a little bit of time to get the right criteria, but we got there.
“It’s always nice when our work helps change someone’s life and you get to see the evidence of that.
“It’s a big reflection on our supporters and of the wider area.”
Mike is hopeful Fatima can recover from her operation and enjoy a complete and happy life.
He said: “The doctors seem to be working miracles, so fingers crossed it’s a success for Fatima and her family.
“Hopefully it means she will be able to lead some sort of normal life.
“Fatima has the most infectious smile I have ever seen.
“This is a very proud moment for Dundee Refugee Support.”
