Police were called to Broughty Ferry beach on Monday night amid reports that more than 100 youngsters were involved in a mass brawl.
Locals took to social media to voice their concerns, with many reporting they had to leave the beach after youths, some as young as 12, got “steaming drunk” and involved in a huge disturbance.
‘It was awful’
Other reports claim youngsters were fighting and being hit with bottles.
One local woman said: “I went to the beach tonight with my two little girls and my partner and while we were there there were multiple groups off youths.
“I reckon there must have been over 100, aged between around 12-18.
“They started running, shouting, scrapping and fighting. This went on from the moment we arrived until the moment we left.
“We actually witnessed them all fighting, throwing bottles and someone said weapons were involved.
“There were a lot of young people injured. Young children were crying because they were so scared – it was just awful.”
She added: “Whatever is going on in Dundee with young kids is crazy.”
‘Something needs to be done’
Another eyewitness added: “The Ferry needs community policing as there are crowds of youngsters hanging around the beach area.
“There are families using the beach and the behaviour is bad.
“Something needs to be done – why spoil it for everyone?”
Broughty Ferry councillor Craig Duncan said he wasn’t aware of the incident.
But he expressed general concerned about the behaviour of some young people in the area.
He said: “This is really disappointing to hear.
“I’ll be taking this forward and urging Police Scotland and Dundee City Council to carry out much more patrolling in the area.
“Everyone know that on a roasting hot day like today very many people flock to the beach.
“Things frequently can get out of hand and trouble can flare.”
Police investigating reports
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.45pm on Monday police were called to a report of a large disturbance at Broughty Ferry beach, Dundee.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
