Official plans have been submitted for a new office block at Dundee’s Waterfront, including 3D images of designs for the second Site 6 building.
Plans for new office and retail units have been submitted by architecture firm Cooper and Cromar as part of the latest development for the Waterfront.
Site 6, which sits across from the V&A, was initially planned to be a high-end hotel before plans fell through.
‘A vibrant business, culture and leisure environment’
Work on the new office block is set to commence in early 2023 to “deliver a vibrant business, culture and leisure environment within the heart of the city”, according to the planning application.
The plot is already home to Agnes Husband House, formerly known as the Earl Grey Building – a controversial addition to the £1 billion development when it was built across the road from the V&A.
That building, now home to Social Security Scotland, attracted criticism, including from Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde – who branded it a “horrible carcass” while playing a gig at Slessor Gardens.
There was more backlash in January, when it was announced a second office block would be built instead of the hotel.
A design statement by the applicant says the five-storey building will reflect the “high quality architecture” of Dundee’s status as a Unesco City of Design.
Canopies on the street providing shelter for “cafés, dining, meeting and browsing” are also in the plans, along with a roof top terrace and 26 parking spaces.
Earlier plans also outlined that later phases of development will feature apartments overlooking the River Tay.
Dundee City Council committed £15 million of funding for the grade A office accommodation with hopes to “attract further investment and employment within the Waterfront area”.
But comments made following a public exhibition of the latest office block were mostly positive, with the developer saying feedback suggested the “proposed development works well with surrounding buildings”.
Comments also included a belief the retails units would encourage footfall to an area “lacking in commercial selection” along with suggestions for a roof top bar or restaurant to be included in plans.
The proposals will be considered in the coming months by the council.
