A “bold and surreal” dance show based on the opera Carmen is set to be held at the West Ward Works building in Dundee.
Dundee City Council has granted a performance licence for the event to be staged at the former DC Thomson printworks by dance company Shaper Caper.
The event, open only to those aged 18 and over, will include Dundee and Angus College students.
The students will perform alongside the Dundee Leisure and Culture Youth Dance Company and the Shaper Caper dancers.
Shaper Caper’s artistic director and choreographer Tommy Small said: “We were delighted to get the performance licence.
“This is a very site specific event – it is made especially for the West Ward Works. The show is based on Carmen, but it is adapted so that it takes place in an old industrial building, namely an abattoir.
“The remaining factory equipment will form part of the scenery and there will be a horror element to the performance. The audience will see people being chased down corridors and kidnapped, and there will be a murder scene.
“Carmen is a temptress who has torments the two men who are in love with her. When Carmen is killed in the abattoir in out performance, that is an allusion to both animals and women are treated – there’s a parallel there.
“We are honoured that we have been given permission to use the building, which has such a local relevance to Dundee.”
The first Dundee Design Festival was held in West Ward Works in the summer and this will be the second cultural event to be staged there.
The shows take place on February 17, 18 and 19 at various time slots between 7.30 and 11.20pm.
