The president of a Dundee junior football team insists proposals to revamp his side’s social club will breathe new life into the community club.
Plans have been lodged to create a community shop and beauty salon within Downfield Social Club, part of Downfield Football Club.
If the proposals are approved, it is believed up to 10 new jobs could be created.
The Balgowan Avenue site is located a short walk from a chain of shops on nearby Haldane Avenue.
Some shop owners have complained the potential development will have a ”detrimental impact”.
Business owners told The Courier on Tuesday the new jobs would be offset by a loss of posts more than 10 jobs would be at risk should planning permission be granted.
Karen Elder, the owner of Karen James Hair & Beauty, and Jodie Aitken, the owner of Cosmo Takeaway, both believe the area does not need another store.
Downfield FC president Alex Duncan however believes a new facility is justifiable.
Mr Duncan feels there are more than enough residents in the surrounding area to make plans to open a new store and salon viable.
In opening a new development he also believes his beloved football club can be granted a new lease of life.
Mr Duncan, who played for Downfield before becoming club president, said: “We don’t want to put people out of work. All we want to do is what is best for our club.
“We think opening up and diversifying with a new grocers and beauty salon will breathe new life into the club.
“There will be no hot food takeaway, we’re only looking to open a grocer shop and beauty salon.
“I can understand the concerns some people have, but Fintry has eight shops and Kirkton only has two.
“Balgowan itself doesn’t have any.
“I’m very passionate about this football club. Downfield needs this football club.
“This is a community club and the grocer shop will be a community shop.”
