Police have hit out at violent scenes in Kirkton on Monday evening that left one officer injured.
Cabinet secretary for justice Keith Brown MSP said in parliament the officer was injured by shards of glass after a brick was thrown through a police vehicle.
Fireworks were also thrown at officers who donned riot gear amid major disorder in Dundee.
Damage was also reported at St Paul’s RC Academy, a shop had its windows smashed and several fires were started.
Responding to the incident, Chief Superintendent Phil Davison said there was “no excuse” for the disorder.
He said: “Inquiries are ongoing to identify everyone involved.
“Throwing fireworks and other items towards emergency services is reckless and dangerous. No one should go to work and expect to be attacked.
“One officer suffered a minor injury and damage was caused to a school and a number of vehicles.
Police aim to ‘reassure public’ after Dundee disorder
“I would like to reassure the public of Dundee that we remain committed to keeping them safe as we understand last night’s behaviour must have been really distressing for residents in the areas.
“We have a range of highly-trained public order officers available to policing commanders across Scotland to enhance resources and deal with any issues that arise.
“Officers will be patrolling the local areas to provide public reassurance.”
Several locals have criticised the police response to the disorder – with claims that officers did not attend incidents on Balgowan Avenue and Beauly Avenue.
Riot officers remained at St Paul’s RC Academy throughout, confronting crowds as they descended on the school.
A series of questions has been put to Police Scotland by The Courier about the force’s planning and response around the riots.
Anyone with information about the disorder is being asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
‘Very challenging situation for police officers’
David Hamilton, chair of the Scottish Police Federation, says the injured officer is being supported.
He told The Courier: “The scenes we saw in Kirkton last night were truly appalling and presented a very dangerous and challenging situation for officers.
“The deliberate firing of explosives, and let’s be clear, that’s what fireworks are, at police officers is off the scale of irresponsibility.
“While investigations continue, we will support our injured colleague and push with new vigour for the implementation of the government’s firework licensing scheme for next year.”
