The Bonnetmakers Craft has existed in Dundee for more than 500 years but it was looking to the future when it met on Friday night.

The largest arm of the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee held its first annual dinner since 2019 at Invercarse Hotel.

The main talks were given by people working with the latest technology.

Chris van der Kuyl, co-owner of 4J Studios which has played a big part in the success of computer game Minecraft, offered a toast to the city of Dundee.

James Hood, managing director of Esports Scotland, delivered a toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades of Dundee and Bonnetmakers Craft.

Deacon Bruce Donaldson said: “An enjoyable evening was had by all on this return to annual events.”

What is the Bonnetmakers Craft of Dundee?

The Bonnetmakers Craft has been in existence since the early 1500s.

Dundee was the first Scottish burgh to have a Bonnetmakers Craft. People producing the hats plied their trade from outside their houses.

It was also one of the few crafts that allowed women into their ranks.

No business of this type exits in Dundee today. However the group survives due to the energy and enthusiasm shown by members towards education and charity work.

The group says: “There may be no operative bonnetmakers left, but the spirit of the craft will last as long as the members find that they can be of service to Dundee.”
