Labour leader urges council to publish concert plans

Slessor Gardens, which will host three concerts this summer

Dundee Labour leader Kevin Keenan has called for Dundee City Council to publish details of its plan for this summer’s trio of headline concerts as soon as possible.

Councillor Keenan believes a number of “unanswered questions” remain over the council’s preparations for the summer gigs.

Slessor Gardens, the venue for the visit of Little Mix, Olly Murs, and UB40, has a capacity of over 11,000.

Promoter, the Liz Hibbs Group, has consistently refused to reveal how many tickets have been sold for the eagerly-anticipated summer gig.

Some planning details were shared by Dundee city centre manager Sarah Craig during a meeting with members of Dundee’s City Centre and Harbour Community Council this week, but Mr Keenan believes more public information is required.

Mr Keenan said: “There seems to be a number of unanswered questions.

“In principle, the idea to host concerts in Dundee is good.

“But many individuals have wanted to organise concerts at Camperdown in the past and the council has said unless they have a good risk assessment then absolutely not.

“I’ve been to some big concerts and it takes a fair time to disperse the crowds.

“The city centre isn’t used to them happening.”

Mr Keenan believes the fact Dundee city centre isn’t used to hosting such large events is all the more reason for the council to be as proactive as possible in its planning.

He said: “I think there needs to be a bit of practice and some careful planning go into this.

“How buses are going to operate and how people are going to be shipped in and out needs to be looked at.

“Safety issues are a real issue.

“There will be some really young people there for the Little Mix concert.

“When I hear about these concerts there doesn’t seem to have been a lot of health and safety gone into it.”

A spokesperson for Dundee City Council said: “The council has replied directly to a query raised by Councillor Keenan.”

Dundee city centre manager Sarah Craig told community council members on Tuesday that traffic delays will be “inevitable” when the concerts take place.

Community council members however said they were pleased with a presentation provided by Ms Craig detailing preparation for the concerts.
