Drivers could face disruption on a busy Dundee stretch for the rest of the week as work to upgrade the broadband network continues.
Long queues have been forming on Arbroath Road this week, often stretching from the Scott Fyffe Roundabout east towards Broughty Ferry.
The delays have been caused by temporary traffic lights at Kemnay Place, to allow CityFibre improvements.
On Wednesday the lights will move towards Gotterstone Avenue, where they will remain until Saturday.
Motorists have reported delays of up to 20 minutes added to their normal journey times.
20-minute delays due to Arbroath Road works
One motorist who was caught up in the traffic on Monday and Tuesday said: “It’s a busy enough road at the best of times but it’s now taking 20 minutes to get from the Sainsbury’s lights to Scott Fyffe and that’s not even peak time.
“I appreciate work needs to be done but perhaps they should have considered working at night to reduce disruption.”
The lights are in place whilst work is carried out for CityFibre, which says it is investing £40 million in Dundee to improve the city’s digital connectivity.
Work on installing the network began last year with the first phases in areas including Charleston, Ardler, Lochee, Downfield, St Mary’s, Menzieshill, Hilltown and Maryfield
This, however, has caused problems for some businesses and in November last year traders in Lochee hit out at the disruption caused by the resulting roadworks – with some claiming they had suffered loss if income as customers stayed away.
The infrastructure work will continue until at least 2023.
Allan McEwan, CityFibre’s area manager for Dundee, said: “The works under way on Arbroath Road by Kemnay Place, and those due to begin at Gotterstone Avenue, are part of our £40m full fibre roll out in Dundee, which will future-proof the city’s digital infrastructure for decades to come.
“This is a major undertaking, which is why we work closely with our build partner and the council’s highways team to manage disruption.
“We always endeavour to make sure works are delivered quickly, and always to our high standards.
“We do everything we can to inform the community ahead of work starting, which includes direct mail, press releases and speaking directly to members of the community.
“We are grateful for the continued support we’ve received from local residents and ask that they continue to bear with us while we deliver these essential works.”
