Up to 40 jobs could be created with plans by John Clark Motor Group to build four new car showrooms just off the Kingsway in Dundee.

The firm has lodged an application with Dundee City Council to redevelop the site of a former Tesco depot on Baird Avenue.

The land has been empty since the warehouse was demolished in 2019.

The wider area is already home to a number of car dealerships, including the Volvo showroom run by the same firm at Dryburgh Industrial Estate, and the Peter Vardy Carz dealership on the other side of the Kingsway.

John Clark Motor Group says its new showrooms would look similar to the Peter Vardy site.

The former Levi’s factor on nearby Dunsinane Avenue is also set to be transformed into a £10 million Lexus car dealership.

John Clark Motor Group – which reported record profits in October after investments in its other Dundee sites – has not confirmed which car manufacturers could sell from the new development.

A planning statement submitted to the council says: “We believe the proposed development will be of benefit to the local area and economy.

Bid to redevelop ‘eyesore’ Dundee site

“The proposal will see the development of a site which has been unused for approximately five years with no prospective buyer or tenant.

“The development would create jobs for the local economy while also making use of a site which has been lying vacant as an eyesore.”

The Tesco warehouse’s closure in 2006 put 430 staff out of work.

It was taken over by PressureFab in 2015, just over a year before the company went out of business.

After its demolition, the site was divided into four individual plots for sale and development.

If approved, the car dealerships would occupy two of these plots.

Planning permission was granted last year for a new office and depot building on another.

While the final plot has been bought, no plans have yet been lodged with the council.

The plans will be considered by the council in the coming months.
