A woman says her puppy was “lucky” not to suffer more serious injuries after being attacked by another dog on a Dundee street.
Michelle Doran fears a child could be injured next after her pocket bully was set upon in Fintry.
Ten-month-old Hooch was being walked on Finlaggan Crescent when he was attacked by a brown and white Staffordshire bull terrier last Thursday.
Hooch suffered swelling and redness to his right eye, just months after surgery where he had skin removed from both his eyelids.
Dog involved ‘not on a lead’
Michelle says the dog involved was not on a lead.
She said: “Me and partner Steve where walking along the street. I was behind with (our other dog) Stella and and Steve was in front with Hooch.
“We both spotted the dog off the lead. We shouted for the owner to get her dog on a lead as we knew what it was like.
“It just started barking and growling.
“Steve stepped in front of Hooch and I picked Stella up. I didn’t know what dog it was going to go for.
“It went for Hooch, trying to bite him. Steve managed to swing Hooch but the dog caught his eye.
“Steve got a hold of the dog by the neck and threw it in the direction of the owner, and she struggled to get a hold of it.
“It went for a second attack then eventually the owner got hold of him.
“This went on for a couple of minutes but it felt longer.
Dog warden investigating attack
“I normally walk my dogs on my own but because of the icy conditions we both went out that night, so it could have been a different story if my partner was not there. We were lucky.”
She has now reported the incident to the city’s dog warden but feels something needs to be done to tackle aggressive dogs.
It comes as trainers in Dundee have warned of a huge increase in attacks on children as they struggle to cope with the number of incidents.
Michelle added: “This is not the first time I have reported this dog following an attack on Stella.
“Does it need to be a child getting attacked before further action is taken?
“Thankfully Hooch is doing OK but he is a bit jumpy.
“We’re just monitoring his eye as he had to have entropion surgery on his eyes in the summer so we are worried.”
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council, which runs the dog warden service, said: “We are aware of this complaint and are currently investigating the matter.”
