Dens Road Market in Dundee could be sold and turned into flats after plans to convert the site into a 10-pin bowling centre fell through.

Chris Airlie, who owns the building, says the cost of converting the abandoned market into an activity centre is now too high.

He was granted permission to convert the property in 2017.

The proposals also included trampolines, slides, mini golf and a cafe.

But with the building now in a serious state of disrepair – after a section of the roof collapsed just before Christmas – Mr Airlie is considering other uses for the site.

He told The Courier: “I will be putting the market up for sale after New Year.

“The costs to develop the adventure centre went through the roof and made it infeasible to do.

“This is the first time (I’m) listing it for sale.”

Mr Airlie says the roof has been made “temporarily safe” but will be “pulled down very shortly”.

The businessman says developers are now interested in the site – and it could be turned into flats.

He said: “A housing association has shown interest for this site.

“The housing association is the main one in Dundee and other areas but I’d better not mention their name.

Hopes walls of former market can be retained

“If any other associations would like to be involved I am open for talks.

“They would probably keep the walls and have a small development of around 50 flats or houses, all closed in with the retaining walls.

“This would at least keep a part of the market’s heritage.”

Mr Airlie bought the site after the market’s former owners went into administration in 2013 and it closed down.

The market boasted 80 stalls at its height and came to be known as “Dundee’s Petticoat Lane” – a reference to the famous market in the East End of London.
