A farming couple near Dundee fear someone is going to be killed after a car crashed into their garden for the 10th time in six years.
The car ploughed through Peter and Susan Arbuckles’ fence just off the A90, around lunchtime on Saturday.
The driver was taken to hospital with unknown injuries.
However, the biggest concern is that the couple’s young granddaughters often play in the garden where the car careered through before coming to rest in the farmyard.
Demand for action
Now, their son Stewart and daughter-in-law Ginny are demanding that something is done before someone is killed.
The Arbuckles run the fruit farm and shop on the edge of the A90 on the outskirts of Dundee.
This latest incident comes after nine almost identical incidents in the past six years, including last April and September and April 2021 when a man had to be cut from his car following a crash at the same spot.
On another occasion Ginny said a car narrowly avoided her as she walked in the garden.
Ginny said: “This keeps happening but despite us asking for action to be taken so far nothing has been done to make this area safer.”
Ginny and Stewart are now terrified to allow their daughters, Izzy, 6 and Josie, 3, to play in the garden in case it happens again.
Stewart said: “This time the car ploughed right across the garden and through the BBQ area where we sit and have family meals.
“It continued on through the fence at the other side of the garden taking the picnic table, BBQ and chairs with it.”
‘It’s only a matter of time before someone is killed’
He added: “It doesn’t bear thinking about what could happen if anyone was in the garden at the time.
“So far no one has been killed but we really believe it’s only a matter of time.”
Stewart said his parents are currently out of the country and not aware of the latest incident.
Ginny believes the accidents are caused by navigation systems giving poor directions to Piperdam holiday resort.
She said: “When people are heading towards Dundee from Perth, the sat nav takes them down the small road just off the dual carriageway at the side of the farm.
“There is no slip road for deceleration.
“On this occasion the car ended up going through the fence, the garden, the fence at the other side and right across the farm yard almost to the shop.
“That area was also so busy with members of the public just before Christmas.”
The couple said that the family have previously spoken with Dundee City Council, which advised them it was a matter for Bear Scotland – which previously maintained the road.
However that contract has now moved to Amey, who declined to comment when approached by The Courier.
Ginny added: “We have spoken with them on numerous occasions but still nothing has been done to remedy this. Something desperately needs done before this happens again.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 2pm on Saturday, to a report of a one car crash on the C12, just off the A90 near Dundee.
“Emergency services attended and a woman, the driver, was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital as a precaution.
“The driver will be reported in connection with a road traffic offence.”
