Scotland’s police watchdog is investigating claims a woman was assaulted by an officer after being arrested at a Dundee newsagent.
The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) has been asked to probe the complaint.
It comes after the 24-year-old woman was arrested by officers at the newsagent on Strathmore Avenue.
She has since been charged with a hate crime, vandalism and police assault.
However, the woman has made a claim that she was assaulted while in police custody at the West Bell Street headquarters.
Pirc independently investigates incidents involving police and reviews the way public complaints are handled.
A spokeswoman for the organisation says a probe has been ordered by the Crown Office.
She said: “We are investigating a criminal allegation of assault made by a 24-year-old woman which occurred in Dundee on January 3.
“The matter was referred to Pirc by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) and a report will be submitted to COPFS in due course.”
Police receive complaint over alleged assault
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 8.50pm on January 3, officers were called to an incident on Strathmore Avenue, Dundee.
“A 24-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a vandalism, hate crime and police assault.”
Asked about the assault allegation, she added: “We have received a complaint and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further.”
