A customer attempted a citizen’s arrest during a ‘siege’ at Greggs on Dundee High Street.

A group of teens caused chaos in the store on Tuesday night, trying to steal and intimidating staff.

One customer who saw the drama unfold said he restrained one of the youths before they resorted to kicking doors, with customers having to be locked in.

Police confirmed they are investigating two incidents at the store.

The 55-year-old customer, who asked not to be named, said staff had their hats and hairnets pulled off by the teens.

‘I had youth offender in headlock’

He said: “I’m a regular at the store, the staff do a great job and I was unhappy about what was unfolding.

“There was a gang of kids, all under 16. There were seven or eight, both inside and outside.

“The staff asked them to return the drinks (they stole) before things got physical.

“I got up and put one of the youths in a headlock and said he was under a citizen’s arrest.”

When staff attempted to intervene the teens left the store, before employees reportedly locked the other customers inside.

‘The kids were going crazy’

He added: “When they were outside they began kicking the glass and trying to get back in.

“This went on for well over and hour but they went away and came back.

“The kids were going crazy, there were gestures made by them insinuating there would be further violence.

“They were kicking the door in, I actually thought it was going to burst open.

“It was literally a siege.

“Staff at the store called the police but there was no sign of them while I was at the shop.

“They (staff) shouldn’t have to put up with this sort of nonsense.”

Police investigating Dundee High Street Greggs ‘disturbance’

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We were made aware of a disturbance involving a group of youths within a business on the High Street in Dundee around 6.40pm on Tuesday.

“A second incident involving the same group was then reported in the same area shortly after 7.50pm.

“Inquiries into both incidents are ongoing.”

Greggs has been approached for comment.
