Memories rekindled a year on from the ‘doon derby’

Craig Wighton is hailed after scoring the winner against Dundee United.

It is either an anniversary to relish or one to quietly forget.

Either way, it won’t have escaped the notice of fans both Tangerine and Dark Blue that it is exactly one years since Dundee United were officially relegated — as a result of defeat at Dens Park.

The “doon derby” on May 2 2016, was won 2-1 by Dundee, with Craig Wighton netting the winner late on.

Inevitably, the anniversary was marked in predictable circumstances on social media, with Dundee fans on Twitter keen to share their glad tidings.

Meanwhile, one fan declared it Craig Wighton day in recognition of the winning scorer.

Since the derby, both teams have had their own struggles.

United have made the Premiership play-offs, but inconsistent form means they fell well short of Championship top dogs Hibs.

Meanwhile, Dundee slumped to seven defeats in a row plummeting them down the Premiership table. Victory at Motherwell under the stewardship of new manager Neil McCann has left them in a less precarious position, but — with just a few games left — it is not impossible that the two sides face another relegation decider, this time in the shape of relegation/promotion play-off.

Not good for the nerves, but it would open the door to a whole new world of banter…
