A popular Dundee butcher is looking to expand into St Andrews.
Scott Brothers Butchers has lodged plans with Fife Council to refurbish an empty unit on Bell Street, which used to be the ‘Sprinkles’ café, into a new shop.
The proposed unit is adjacent to the existing Rettie estate agency and Alpaca Links clothing shop.
If approved, the St Andrews shop would be the first outside of Dundee for the long-standing butchers.
Scott Brothers hopes the new shop will be open by early May.
Scott Brothers looks to capture Fife market
In a supporting statement submitted with the application, Scott Brothers said it is hoped the business can take advantage of passing trade in the town.
The statement said: “The rich history and continuous success of Scott Brothers Butchers would make for a great addition to Bell Street.
“The development of this successful and long-standing business would benefit not only
the convenience of the community by extending the high-quality product range availability, but will also attract more business from passing tourists.”
It added: Bell Street is in the heart of St Andrews, located just 0.2 miles from the University of St Andrews and is a high-street style parade of an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants and businesses.
“The proposals within this application would create an attractive food retail store that truly falls in line with the traditional values in which St Andrews stands for.”
The Scott Brothers Butcher was founded in 1935 and has shops on Dundee’s Nethergate, Strathmartine Road and in Broughty Ferry.
The firm is currently run by the founder’s grandsons Scott and George Jarron, who say they are excited at the prospect of opening in St Andrews.
Scott said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity, it’s a bit of a dream actually.
“We have looked at it for a number of years but the town was always well served with butchers.
“But now Minick of St Andrews has shut, there is an opportunity. It suits our business because we like to be in a high footfall area.
“St Andrews is like Broughty Ferry, though the clientele is slightly different with the students and tourists.
“We are very hopeful we can work with Fife Council to get this through quickly.”
