A Dundee woman has slammed the council for failing to clear an abandoned van parked outside her home.
Charleston resident Elizabeth Marr says she and other residents have repeatedly complained to Dundee City Council about the run down vehicle.
And with a lack of action taken to move the van, which has been parked in the Brownhill Road car park since August, there are fears it could attract a firebug attack.
The dumped van is already in poor condition, with two flat tyres and a smashed back window.
Elizabeth, 66, told The Courier: “It has been there since August and I have no idea who left it.
“It looks like some kind of work van – it’s got roof ladders on it.
“I’ve reported it to the council a countless number of times, but they’re not willing to do anything. They’re just ignoring me.”
Fears abandoned van could attract vandals
The retired mental health support worker says she and her husband are worried about potential damage to their own cars.
She said: “If vandals see an abandoned van they might set it on fire or break windows and our cars are there too”.
Elizabeth also claims the van is taking up a vital space in the popular car park.
Situated next to St Clements Primary School and Camperdown Parish Church, the facility is used by parents during the school run as well as church-goers and residents.
She said: “It is difficult to find a place at the best of times – I couldn’t get my car in the other day.
“The way the van is parked means it is taking up one-and-a-quarter spaces as well”.
Another resident, who asked not to be named, also claims his complaints have been ignored by the council.
The 69-year-old said: “It’s a bit of an eye-sore.
“I am worried about vandals. It’s just a matter of time before it’s set on fire.
“I have my campervan sitting there and I wouldn’t want it to get damaged.
“I’ve reported it to the council but they haven’t done anything.
“It’s disappointing. People take pride in this scheme, and then you get things like this”.
Council ‘investigating’
A spokesperson for Dundee City Council said: “We are investigating the matter.
“Members of the public can report instances of abandoned vehicles directly to us on our specific abandoned vehicles webpage.
“This resource also has questions and answers on how we deal with such reports.”
