Dundee bargain hunters have been left disappointed after Farmfoods’ shelves were emptied in just two hours during its huge closing day sale.
The city centre branch, which closed on Sunday, slashed 50% off all its remaining stock on its final trading day.
The closure of the Cowgate store was confirmed last week, when signs appeared in the windows.
It is not yet known if workers will lose their jobs or be moved to the Lochee branch.
Shoppers flocked to the store for its 8am opening, with a member of staff telling The Courier “everything was gone” by 10am.
Many customers who arrived shortly after were forced to leave empty handed.
Daniel Abraham, a student at Dundee University, visits Farmfoods every few weeks to stock up on his frozen fruit.
The 23-year-old said: “I was hoping to grab some frozen fruit, I usually make smoothies with it.
“I was going to grab food for my friend as well, who told me about the sale.
“It’s a shame, but I’ll be fine, it’s not the end of the world”.
He added: “There is another one in Lochee but this is my closest one so it’s quite inconvenient.”
Closure is a blow during cost of living crisis
Carer Tracy Anderson, 53, said: “I’m sad about it closing. I’m in shock.
“I always grab stuff here I can’t get at Iceland.
“I won’t go to the Lochee one – it’s too far away.
“It’s a blow to people who live here, especially with the cost of living crisis.
“People are always on the look out for good prices”.
Another customer, who asked not to be named, was surprised to learn he had missed the sale.
He said: “Is it over already?
“Here’s me thinking I was going to get some bargains.
“I just wanted frozen food, rice, anything.
“Sad times.”
Dundee dancer Niamh O’Loughlin, 29, said: “I read about the sale in The Courier.
“I was just wandering past when I remembered and decided to have a look.
“I’m a bit disappointed it’s sold out already”.
Mum-of-three Neelum Aftab said: “I heard about the sale on Facebook.
“I can’t believe it sold out so quickly.”
She added: “I come here every week.
“I will go to the Lochee one now, but I come into the city centre more often so it’s a lot easier to come here.”
The shop, which sits opposite the Wellgate Shopping Centre, is the latest in a string of city centre closures.
A spokesperson for Farmfoods said: “I can confirm that our Cowgate shop is now permanently closed.
“The decision to close the shop was a commercial one but we are very grateful to all of our customers who have been shopping with us since the shop opened and we do still value their custom.”
