An Angus teacher has told of his “disbelief” after sneak-in thieves stole his car from outside his home in Broughty Ferry.
Paul Strachan was asleep in his house on Gauldry Terrace on Saturday night when someone entered the unlocked property, took the keys for the car and drove off with it.
Paul, 60, a chemistry teacher at Carnoustie High School, initially thought his daughter Suzanne had moved the black Vauxhall Astra, before realising it had been stolen.
He has now changed his locks after the culprits also took one of his house keys.
He said: “I was just in my house, sleeping. I didn’t hear anything.
“They came in the front door, took the keys from the hall and then drove the car away.
“My neighbours think they heard something like a loud bang at about 3.30am but never saw anything.
“I went out to drive it that afternoon and noticed it was missing.”
Inside the car – which has registration number SP64 YOO – were expensive glass bowls, worth an estimated £350, that were given to Paul by his dad.
Jump leads and Paul’s work bag were also taken.
He believes the theft may be linked to other incidents nearby where car and house door handles have been tried.
He said: “I’m in disbelief. I’ve lived here for 30 years and there has never been any crime.
“You never think it’s going to happen. It’s a very quiet street, all of the neighbours look out for each other.
“I just can’t believe someone has come into my house and I didn’t hear anything.”
Suzanne, who lives with her dad, said: “We’re still shocked by it.
“I was away at the weekend so wasn’t at home and can’t help but think they could have taken mine.
“It has affected how he’s going to work and things but the thieves don’t think about that.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 1.35pm on Sunday, police were called to a report that a black Vauxhall Astra has been stolen between 6pm on Friday and 1.30pm on Sunday from outside an address on Gauldry Terrace, Broughty Ferry.
“Inquiries into the theft are continuing.”
