A Dundee pub fears there could be further blazes after their bins were targeted by firebugs in the fifth attack in recent weeks.
Bertie Mooney’s staff were forced to extinguish another fire on Sunday after bins at the rear of the Commercial Street venue were set alight.
Staff used jugs of water and a fire extinguisher to prevent it from spreading on Meadow Entry.
Pub manager Ashley Davidson revealed the incident at the weekend comes just weeks after another fire occurred at the same spot.
The 42-year-old said: “Thankfully the one on Sunday was spotted fairly quickly and staff got jugs of water and a fire extinguisher on it.
“The firefighters came and hosed it down but this is our fifth incident in just a matter of months.
“Just a few weeks back there was an even bigger fire that staff had to try and help put out before the firefighters arrived.
“It’s obviously worrying that this is happening – especially so near to the beer garden and also near parked cars.”
The incident is the fifth in recent week, leaving staff concerned another fire could have more serious consequences.
Ms Davidson added: “Our staff are being as vigilant as they possibly can but we’re genuinely fearing something worse is going to happen.
“We’ve been thankful that staff at other businesses have also been helping in keeping an eye out.
“Staff at the Tesco on the Murraygate can see up Meadow Entry and they’ve contacted emergency services previously.
“Although there is no proof we’re fearing these blazes are being started deliberately, the last two have happened in broad daylight.
Metal bins to be installed
“At the moment we’re trying to get metal bins outside instead of plastic to try and stop the bins being damaged.”
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed one appliance was sent to Meadow Entry on Sunday.
A spokesman said: “We were alerted on Sunday March 26 to reports of a bin fire in Dundee.
“Operations Control mobilised one fire appliance to the city’s Meadow Entry, where firefighters extinguished a fire involving a large external bin.
“Crews thereafter left the scene.”
