They say your school years are the best ones of your life.
For former Whitfield High pupils that certainly seems to be the case, after more than 1000 of them flocked to a newly-created nostalgia Facebook group for the school.
Created by Dundee man Kevin Thomson, Whitfield High – The Wonder Years is a page for ex-pupils to share photos, memories and information about an upcoming reunion.
The event has proved so popular that tickets sold out within days and some of those who missed out said they were considering sneaking in anyway.
Kevin, who attended the school between 1978-1982, said: “Initially I wasn’t planning to organise a reunion, I just wanted to set up the page.
“But so many people were asking about it, so I decided to do it. The reunion will be a chance to raise money for good causes.
“We’re going to donate some of the money to Braeview Academy, which replaced Whitfield High, and some of the money will also go to local charity Link-Up Whitfield.”
Kevin explained he was inspired to create a nostalgia page after spending time around people with dementia, which made him realise how fragile memory is.
He added: “I work in a care home as a maintenance man and some of the people in the home have absolutely no memories due to dementia.
“It made me think about how awful it would be to lose all your memories and I wanted to do something to keep people’s memories fresh.
“I set up the page around three months ago and already it’s proven hugely popular. We’ve sold all 150 tickets for the reunion.”
Kevin said despite being pleased about the popularity of the event, those without a ticket should refrain from showing up.
He said: “Please be aware the venue is at full capacity and could be closed down if we are over the numbers.
“This is a get-together that will be raising money for good causes, so if you have not already purchased a ticket sadly you will not be able to attend.”
Whitfield High School was opened in 1976 and closed in 1996 to become Braeview Academy.
The reunion will be held at Michelin Athletic Club on Friday from 7pm until 12am.
