A woman has told of the moment residents were evacuated from their homes as fire ripped through a Dundee flat.
Three crews were called to Dundonald Street in Stobswell at around 8pm on Wednesday.
Firefighters forced entry into a flat before other residents were told to leave the block.
One woman living in the building, who did not want to be identified, said: “It was very scary what happened – we’re just thankful everyone got out safely.
“The smoke alarm had been going for around 20 minutes and we were becoming concerned.
“We then established there was actually a fire. We could see the black smoke and we could feel the heat from the door.
“A neighbour from above saw the smoke coming from the kitchen area.
“We started banging the door of the flat but no one was answering.”
The woman says firefighters initially told residents to block their doors using towels, before she heard a “woosh”.
She added: “Within seconds the firefighters told us we needed to go and all the homes were evacuated.
‘We’re extremely thankful everyone is OK’
“We were out in the street for two hours as police closed a section of Dundonald Street off.
“I have to say the firefighters and the police were absolutely fantastic at the scene.
“The firefighters kept checking on us and asking if we were OK.
“Once we got back in at around 10pm we didn’t realise how bad the smoke damage was in the close. It’s quite bad on the landing.
“We’re just extremely thankful everyone is OK.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received a call at 7.59pm of reports of a fire on Dundonald Street.
“Appliances from Macalpine Road and Kingsway fire stations attended the scene.
“Crews used four breathing apparatus, a main jet, a hose reel jet and a thermal imagining camera.
“We received the stop message at 9.57pm.”
