Police have issued an appeal after a gang of youths dropped items from a
footbridge over a Dundee’s dual carriageway on to passing cars.
One car was struck as the shocked driver desperately tried to take evasive action.
The incident is said to have taken place on Friday around 7.30pm at the Pitkerro Roundabout, on Kingsway East.
East End councillor Will Dawson described the crime as “mindless, reckless and completely deplorable”.
The Dundee City Council development management convener said: “Vehicles leaving the roundabout can be making their way back up to 40 miles an hour.
“Should something be dropped and break a windscreen or puncture a tyre then it could lead to very serious consequences for the driver.
“I would urge anyone with information to contact the police.
“It’s scary to think what could happen if something had gone through a
windscreen.”
Police confirmed they are on the hunt for five youths, particularly two hooded teenagers who are thought to have been behind the act.
Jason Wakeford, a spokesman for Brake, the road safety charity, said: “This is a concerning incident which could easily have ended in very tragic circumstances.
“We urge the public to report any relevant information to the police and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.”
A RAC spokesman said: “This could prove to be highly distracting to drivers.
“It’s right that the police are treating this seriously.
“It doesn’t matter what kind of item it is, it could be distracting for drivers and could have led to all sorts of problems.”
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Although the car was not damaged as the items were small, this caused the driver of the car which was struck to swerve.
“Fortunately traffic was light and no other vehicles were involved, however the potential danger from this kind of reckless action cannot be overstated.
“There were five youths in total in the group, however the two responsible were described as about 14 to 16 years of age and wearing blue track suit hooded tops.
“Anyone with any information that may be useful should contact Tayside Division on 101 quoting CR/14323/17 or speak to any police officer.
“Alternatively information can be passed anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
