The mum of well-loved Tayside youngster Blake McMillan has hailed her “miracle” son.
Blake McMillan, five, from Carnoustie, has been critically ill in hospital since the weekend.
The five-year-old, who suffers from MECP2 Duplication Syndrome, took ill following a standard operation.
Blake’s mum, Jenny, was told his only slim hope for survival was if surgeons removed his bowel, and formed a stoma to allow waste to be removed from his body.
Now, though Blake is not out of harm’s way, Jenny revealed her “fighter” son is refusing to give in.
She said: “My son is a miracle.
“On Sunday at 12 midday, I would honestly say I thought, and the doctors thought, he wouldn’t see Monday.
“I spent the majority of Sunday night awake and thinking about his funeral. I cried lots, I was shaking with fear, I was utterly terrified of not taking my son home with me.
“Roll onto Thursday and he has been weaned off many of the drugs he was on, sedation and morphine have been reduced greatly. He is no longer paralysed.
“What’s left of his bowel is functioning and feeds into it have started at 2ml/hr. He is also receiving something called TPN which is nutrition into his veins to try to make him stronger. He is still on his ventilator which is breathing for him but the settings have been reduced.”
Blake’s tenacity and strength is inspiring Jenny.
She revealed: “I don’t want to get too excited as I know things could take a turn for the worse at any given time, but I am allowing myself to have some hope again.
“I’m quite sure if I opened a dictionary to the word “fighter”, there would be a picture of Blake there. This boy amazes me, he really does.
“Maybe he is just desperate to get his new school uniform, I don’t know, but he is so strong, despite being so fragile.”
