A Dundee child will honour his gran by scaling the UK’s tallest mountain.
Jack Lowe, 10, was inspired to raise funds for research into blood cancer care after his beloved gran died in November after suffering from Acute Myloid Leukaemia.
The determined 10-year-old and his family will now take on the 1345-metre trek up Ben Nevis to raise funds for Bloodwise UK.
Jack’s mother, Jenifer, will join her son, a pupil at Dundee’s St Peter and Paul Primary School, on his mammoth challenge.
She revealed: “The pair of them (Jack and his brother) were quite close to my mum.
“We would go round and see her at weekends and play out at the park.
“This is something Jack came up with himself. I’m so proud of him.
“We are a bit apprehensive, but a few friends have done Nevis, so we thought if they can do it, then why not?
“We’ve got two Munros under our belt at the moment. I wouldn’t say Jack is nervous, but he knows it is going to be hard.”
Jack said: “I’m really excited. It is going to quite difficult, but it is not something I am nervous about.
“I have told some of my friends at school and they’re actually quite surprised. It was really sad (when Jack’s gran died), so I decided to do this. I’ve never done anything like this before.”
Stacy Rowan, regional manager for Scotland at blood cancer research charity Bloodwise, said: “We are truly inspired by Jack and his family, and the fantastic challenge they are taking on to climb Ben Nevis. The money they raise will help us to fund our ground-breaking research and work that we do to improve the lives of everyone affected by blood cancer.
“Blood cancer is the third biggest cancer killer and the fifth most common cancer in the UK. We are completely in awe of the dedication that Jack and his family have shown in helping us to beat blood cancer, and we wish them all the best for their challenge this summer.”
Jack’s Ben Nevis quest takes place on Saturday August 5.
