A Barnhill man feels like he is “speaking to a brick wall” after council gardeners destroyed wildflowers he had planted for a second year running.
Frank Murphy, of Abernethy Road, had bought wildflower seeds from prestigious horticulture destination Kew Gardens in London with the hopes of growing a wildflower meadow to accompany his planter display.
The keen gardener said he wanted to brighten up Barnhill with his display, but was left dismayed for a second year after the flowers apparently had weedkiller poured on them by a council employee.
The council has said they will be in discussion with the Barnhill Tenants and Residents Association to organise replanting.
Mr Murphy said: “We have been trying to brighten the place up over the years by planting varying types of flowers throughout the area.
“We went down to Kew Gardens in London and managed to pick up some packets containing wildflower seeds, which we managed to get planted.
“Daffodils were also planted beside them. Unfortunately, it was a waste of time because they ended up being sprayed in weedkiller.
“I raised the same issue, alongside the Barnhill Tenants and Residents Association, with the council last year but I feel like I wasn’t listened to.
“We spoke to someone from the council who met with us and we felt like the issue has resolved, but since then it’s been like speaking to a brick wall.
“I am still waiting for a response from the council. There is another tenant who actually asked the gardeners to stop cutting the grass and spraying the flowers because they were destroying his daffodil display.”
A similar wildflower meadow on Riverside Drive has received praise from Dundee residents in recent weeks.
A Dundee City Council spokesperson said: “We have spoken directly with members of the residents’ group and we will be helping them to re-establish planting in the area.”
