A man has been detained by police following a break-in at an opticians in Dundee city centre.
Staff arrived at Specsavers in Murraygate on Monday morning to find the glass door of the premises had been boarded up by police after it had been smashed during the alleged break-in.
Blood was visible in the doorway of the store, which remained closed throughout Monday.
It is understood the break-in was discovered on Sunday night and police secured the premises.
But staff did not learn about the break-in until they arrived to open the shop on Monday.
They had to wait while CID officers carried out their investigations before learning whether or not the store would open as normal.
The decision was later made to keep Specsavers closed until Tuesday.
It is believed the raiders made off with a pair of frames and an ophthalmic instrument.
One staff member said: “We don’t know how bad it is. But we’re not a cash business. Everyone pays by card.”
Tony Caffrey, store director at Specsavers in Dundee, said: ‘We’d like to thank Police Scotland, and also thank Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Café Nero for allowing our staff to use their facilities this morning during the disruption.”
Mr Caffrey said the incident had been “upsetting” for staff members.
He said: “A member of staff arrived first thing to find the front door
completely boarded up.
“It would appear it was smashed in the break-in, which we have been told
happened at 11pm on Monday.”
Mr Caffrey sad: “There was a bit of a mess left and we are staying closed for the rest of the day to clear up.
“This has been upsetting for
everyone here but we are very grateful to neighbouring businesses who rallied round to help.”
A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed a man had been detained in connection with the incident.
