Dundonians asked to put on dancing shoes for 2023 Capital of Culture bid

People across Dundee are being asked to put on their dancing shoes in support of the city’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2023.

The mass choreographed dance event will take in Slessor Gardens on Saturday October 7.

The routine has been inspired by some of Dundee’s favourite landmarks and characters.

An online tutorial is available for anyone who wants to take part in the event and features a host of new dance moves with Dundee-inspired names such as the Law Hill, Sails of the Discovery, Waves of the Tay, Telescope from Mills Observatory as well moves inspired by comic characters Desperate Dan, Oor Wullie and Dennis the Menace.

The routine has been designed by Thomas Small, founder of the Shaper/Caper dance company.

The dance is set to the official Dundee 2023 soundtrack, Over Bridges.

Filmed at The Space, it is hoped the online tutorial will inspire hundreds of people to practise the moves at home, before joining in with the planned mass dance session at Slessor Gardens on October 7.

A free rehearsal is set to take place on Wednesday October 4 at Craigowl Primary School between 7-9 pm for those who want to practise their moves before the dig day.

Mr Small said: “We hope people will rise to the challenge and learn some of the moves online, then come along to meet us and practise with the professionals at Slessor Gardens on October 7.

“It will be fun, energetic and a great opportunity to show that Dundee loves dancing.

“Dundee’s dance halls were an important part of the community through to the 60s. We want to bring that spirit back.”

He added:  “Listening to the official anthem gave us the ideas for the main movements like the Tay and we also wanted to feature other iconic locations like the Law, Discovery, and the Mills Observatory, and our much-loved comic characters of course.”

Anna Day, bid manager for Dundee 2023, said: “This is a brilliant initiative from the dance community in Dundee.

“We are thrilled they have stepped forward with this fantastic idea, which is something everyone can participate in.

“We will be filming the dance event and hope to show it as part of our official bid presentation to the judges at the end of October.

All events are free to attend but all  participants under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult
