The owners of a landmark Broughty Ferry pub have been asked to call time on a planned remodel despite it already being approved by councillors.
Belhaven Greene King, the firm which owns the property, declined to offer assurances the proposals will not interfere with the unique culture and history of the Fisherman’s Tavern on Fort Street.
Under the plans, the snug bar at the rear of the premises would be removed to allow space for a new toilet area. A new bar and gantry at the pub would also be installed.
A spokeswoman for the company said they are unable to confirm whether original fixtures and fittings will be retained or if locals will be consulted on the work.
Councillor Lynne Short, a former employee, said stripping out the bar – which has been a Ferry fixture since 1872 – would be a “real loss” for local people.
She said: “It will take away some character that we’ll never ever get back – perhaps now is the time for the Ferry to say no.
“Just because they have been given planning permission doesn’t mean they have to actually go ahead. Do they realise the history behind the pub and what they have on their hands here?
“There will be masses of visitors coming here next year for the Open Golf Championship and the Fish could offer something really different.”
Local chart-topper Gary Clark, who has worked with some of the world’s most popular recording artists, said he had been “completely saddened” by the move.
He added: “Whenever I have international visitors in Dundee I always take them to the Fish. It’s an historic landmark as far as I’m concerned, one of a kind and should be protected.”
Belhaven bought the beloved Broughty Ferry bar in 2007 and pledged at the time to retain its revered old-time aesthetic.
A spokeswoman for firm said: “We have a number of heritage pubs in our portfolio and we are committed to successfully implementing updates that improve guest experience, while at the same time remaining respectful to the original features of a building.
“This is the case with the Fisherman’s Tavern, where a number of new toilets will be added to improve guest comfort, in addition to a refresh that will bring the interior up to our high standards.”
