Work on a £4 million housing development in Dundee will be completed in October next year after Dundee City Council planners approved the final part of the project.
Hillcrest Housing Association is building 40 new homes on vacant land in Eliza Street in Stobswell.
The development includes 36 flats and four semi-detached homes.
The development is now scheduled to be completed in less than 12 months’ time, finally bringing to an end a long-running planning saga that began 12 years ago.
Plans to develop the site were originally submitted to Dundee City Council in 2005 but had to be resubmitted following the economic downturn.
Although the flats were approved by councillors in Dundee last year, Hillcrest was only granted final approval for the four semi-detached properties this week after the plans for the homes were resubmitted to the council in August.
12 years after the plans were first put forward, Hillcrest has been given the green light to finish the project.
A spokesperson for the housing association said: “I can confirm that work on our development at Eliza Street has started. The project completion date is the end of October 2018.”
The Eliza site was cleared some several ago and has lain vacant ever since, attracting fly-tipping and vandalism.
Ogilvie Construction won the contract to build the social housing scheme in May and construction on the flats began during the summer.
All the homes will be built to the Greener Homes Innovation Scheme standard using sustainable construction methods and creating fuel efficient homes that reduce energy bills.
Each of the houses will have three bedrooms and over 50 square meters of garden ground. Additionally, each plot will have an off-street car parking space.
However, before work on the homes can begin Hillcrest will have to satisfy a number of conditions imposed on the development by Dundee City Council planners.
These included getting approval from Scottish Water over their drainage system and that all gates for the homes open inwards, rather than out over the pavement.
Hillcrest Housing Association provides social housing across Dundee, Edinburgh, Angus, Perthshire and Fife.
It celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala dinner at the Apex Hotel in Dundee last week.
